June Devotion - Transforming Mission

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not confirm any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The vision of Micah Network is: ‘a global community of Christians mobilised for transforming mission through the Gospel’. The interpretation of transforming mission is two-fold:
1. That mission itself is transforming and we are promoting this to be towards integral mission.
2. The all that we do has a transforming impact

The term ‘transforming mission’ was borrowed from David Bosch’s excellent book on the subject. Bosch recognised that mission was multi-dimensional and impacts all parts of our lives. He highlighted six dimensions that are helpful for us to prayerfully consider as we exercise and help our minds renew (Romans 12:2)

1. Incarnation: Jesus came down and lived amongst us. He was present, relevant and engaged in everyday life alongside and with us. Likewise we need to be present and involved in the lives of our family, friends and community. Let’s pause for a moment and think about whether we really are present? Often for those of us involved in busy and fulfilling ministries and aid responses, we excuse ourselves from being present for those whom we share our lives with. I was recently in Delhi spending time with Dino L Touthang, our International Board’s Chair. He shared with me that the reasons he insists on staying on as a pastor in his local church are that it keeps his life real and he engages with people in their everyday struggles and celebrations.

2. The Cross: Jesus demonstrated sacrificial love and humility. Many ask ‘Where is God in the midst of pain and suffering?’ – he’s on the cross for us, so that suffering and pain will come to an end; so that we can be reconciled to God. Let’s pause a moment and consider the power of the love that resolutely chose the cross for us.

God is not disillusioned about us, as knowing the very worst about us; he still chose the cross for us. We are called to forgive, serve and love with that same Spirit, reaching out to all with this Good News.

3. Resurrection: We are new creations! We are witnesses and ambassadors of the Kingdom of God. What image and representation do we give of this Kingdom in our families, amongst our friends and within the community? We need to demonstrate and proclaim the new life we have in Christ. Let’s pause a moment to consider if our words and actions reflect this new life?

4. Ascension: Jesus Christ reigns! He is Lord and Saviour. He declared that the Kingdom of God is here now, and though we live in the tension of the now and not yet, as we engage in integral mission we are a fragrance and evidence of the Kingdom coming as transformation and restoration-flow. As we stand for justice and peace we herald in the Kingdom of God. Let us pause a moment to worship and honour the King of Kings and invite Him to be Lord of our lives.

5. Holy Spirit: We have received the down-payment of the new Kingdom guaranteeing all that is and will be. Transformation is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit! The real power to see transformation is through the activity of the Holy Spirit as we walk with Him – the fruit and gifts are there. Let’s pause a moment and invite the Holy Spirit to guide us through each moment of the day, opening our eyes and heart to respond as Jesus did.

6. Christ’s Return: We are involved in God’s mission until he returns. And when he asks how we have used the gifts and opportunities he has given us to be a part of transforming mission through the Gospel, what will be our reply? Let’s hope and continue to pray together that we will have multiplied and represented the Kingdom faithfully.

Strategic Framework

Promoting Integral Mission

The Review of the Micah Declaration on Integral Mission takes place from June 23rd to 24th at High Wycombe, UK. This is a privilege to facilitate, but there have been a number of challenges – please pray with us throughout the month:

o That all participants who have committed to attend will give time to prepare and seek God’s direction as they gather together to review the way ahead.

o That the logistical challenges will be solved:
Visa for René Padilla to be approved
Travel arrangements to be finalised – that everyone would have a safe travel to and back from this event, being refreshed and inspired.
For Rogelio Prieto-Duran as he prepares to be the interpreter (Spanish) – for his health and well-being.

o For finances: we had hoped to have participants sponsored by now and are still short of 12 people’s costs to cover. Please pray that God will release this money to make it possible for all who have been invited to attend.

An integral mission conversation was held in Salatiga and Delhi in May. These were very inspiring times together:

o Micah Network Indonesia has been established – please pray for this new coordination group who have committed themselves to serve our shared vision and mission.

o We have 68 members in India and we discussed how we can better serve members here. Please pray as brainstorming begins within the Indian membership as to how to take this forward.

Enhancing Capacity

Regional consultation for 2011:

o Africa: 15th to 19th November in Zambia (Africa Mobilising for Integral Mission): finalising the cost units continues to drag on – please pray for Ben Akpera and Martin Kapendam as they work hard to get a good deal / contract with the accommodation providers.

o Asia: 17th to 21st October in Sri Lanka (Asia Mobilising for Integral Mission): we have located a place – thank you God and now we are working on the speakers and finalising the programme. Please pray for us to complete this and find the right people to lead.

o Latin America: The new 3 years strategic plan has just been developed. Please pray for Ruth Alvarado as she mobilises the network to engage in integral mission

5th Triennial: 10th to 14th September 2012: please pray for us as we meet this month to consider them theme and topics for this important gathering.

Networking

• The memorial service for Shaha B Gurung will be held in Nepal on the 16th June – please pray for family and friends who deeply mourn the loss of a husband, father, dear friend and colleague.

• Praise God for our new look website! www.micahnetwork.org – it is at last working and we have had over 74,000 visits to it! Pray for us as we try and iron out the few hiccups the site is still experiencing. Please pray that this platform will help link and equip Christian organisations around the world.

Global Prayer - UN Involvement

Please pray about these issues from around the world:

The ongoing civil war in Libya is having a devastating impact on the lives of thousands of people.

The civil war that occurred after the elections in Côte d’Ivoire.

We see the UN engaging increasingly in a more aggressive type of peace making. Please pray for those in decision-making positions and for Christians on the ground caring for those caught up in these wars.

News Alert!

We have our annual staff meeting in England this month – please pray for Sheryl, Timothy, Sundar, Ruth, Ben and Greg as we share together. Pray for our travel and well-being, as well as for our inspiration to guide one another through plans for the coming months.

On June 22nd we will be holding a one day workshop on Reconciliation run by Dr Rhiannon Lloyd. Please pray that this time of staff training would help guide us as we seek how to roll out this training and support to all the members.

Members' & Friends' Prayer Requests

Dave Khai: Please pray for his meeting on Sunday 5th June with Jinja Project Uganda discussing a project to produce a music CD with tracks focusing on justice and God's heart towards the poor and suffering. Pray also for his fund-raising to spend 5 more years from 20112 working in Thailand using music in reconciliation and restoration projects.

India's National AIDS Control Organisation and the Delhi Network of People living with HIV DNP+ had responded to information that a number of centres in North India had run out of drugs, resulting in the disruption of supply to people living with HIV, by staging a peaceful and non-violent sit-in in the offices of NACO last week. Pray that this resolution will enable the establishment of robust processes for the continuous supply of essential medicines, and thank God for the courage and commitment of the people of DNP+ and their families to act with such urgency in solidarity with people who are outside of their own specific 'mandate'.

Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance: Please pray for an Interfaith Prayer Breakfast in New York on 10th June. The event will promote leadership and accountability for the implementation of the new outcome document from the 2011 UN Review on AIDS, which will build on reviews of political commitments made in 2001 and 2006. In particular, it will bring together leaders from different sectors, including religious leaders, political leaders, business leaders, people living with HIV and representatives of key population groups, with a view to forging new partnerships for strengthened collaboration in the response to HIV. Pray that God's wisdom and heart will be expressed in the outcomes of this event and that those attending would be challenged by the compassion of Jesus' love.

Equity

Pray through the Micah Network work values. This month:

Equity:
Jesus treated every person equally, without regard for their social or economic status (Mark 12.14). We aspire to the same godly “disinterest” in status in our personal and organisational relationships. We will endeavour to resist those attitudes and practices that link influence and authority to economic power, gender, geography or history.

Have a blessed month!
